Roman Art

For several centuries, Ancient Rome was the most powerful on earth, excelling all others at military organization and warfare, engineering and architecture. Furthermore, its unique cultural achievements include the invention of the dome and the groin vault. Despite this, Roman sculptors and painters produced only a limited amount of outstanding original find art. Moreover, Roman practice many type of art including sculpture, find art painting, and decorative art. But, it was its urban architecture that was ground-breaking as was its landscape painting and portrait busts.

Rome had born some great artists that keep on mention past tense until today. Furthermore, they’d also return down in academicals syllabus for other generations review and not forget to mention in history books. As they’d create some great and ground-breaking masterpiece that hardly be imagine during those days. The most famous artists evergreen, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. Those three artists were the great artists among all. Leonardo Da Vinci had created many art works and most famous one is known as The Vitruvian Man or in Italian called Le Proporzioni Del Corpo Umano Secondo Vitruvio, a drawing made by him using ink. Furthermore, it is executed around 1490 accompany by notes based on the works of the architect Vitruvius. Michelangelo is the creator of the painting called “The Creation Of Adam” and was created around 1512. It is a fresco painting which forms part of the Sistine chapel’s ceiling. Moreover, it is a kind of history painting during the renaissance period. The school of Athens is another artwork by a great artist Raphael or in Italian called “Scuola Di Athene” and it is about Ancient Greece and is located at Raphael Rooms. Furthermore, it is created around 1509 with 5.0mx7.7m dimension. Same as Michelangelo’s artwork it is also a history painting.

Realism. That was the style that they used in their artwork. In the early Roman art around 510 BCE to 270 BCE, the romans tended to be realistic and direct. As if they made a portrait, the portrait itself either to be 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional. Usually the portrait will be detailed and un-idealized without focusing on propaganda. For example, we can see on the Column of Marcus Aurelis which was created around 180-193 BCE. It is a Doric Column featuring a spiral relief and was built in honour of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelis and model past on Trajan’s Column. After that, eroticism also popularly figured into the paintings of Ancient Rome and for example, Triumphal painting were very important to romans as they showcase important military victories or events from wars. In fact, one of the older romans paintings discovered in a tomb is a scene of soldiers and their weapons.

Next, Rome is famous for its sculpture and find art painting but many not know that they also work on decorative art such as music, jewelry, and ivory carving. Back then, all of their works were handmade. Indeed, sculptors and find art paintings practiced by romans were executed perfectly using either bronze, marble statuary or murals for example Phidias or pheidias was a Greek sculptor, painter and architect who lived in the 5th century BC, and is commonly regarded as one of the greatest of all sculpture and one of his great artwork is Lemnian Athena. The Lemnian Athena was a classical great statue of the goddess Athena. According to Pausanias, the original bronze was created by Phidias circa 450-440 BCE.

After that, Romans prefer extreme realism when it came to portraiture even of emperor and their families. Furthermore, the usage of colour their painting are for freshness and vivid. The freedom and vigor of the drawing, would seem to indicate that even from this ancient days, Italy was the home of painters of great talent. During 12th century to the 8th century BC, brown painting in the vases called geometrical style. In the next period the figure of man and gods to be more realistic and were painted in black on the red clay. But the most obvious we can see about Romans style is their eroticism artworks. It was a part from Romans attitude and to understand the Romans, it is necessary to understand their bedroom practiced.

Equally important, The Romans art can be found either Pompeii or Herculaneum. Pompeii is a town in Italy which was an ancient Romans town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania. As also as at Herculaneum, an ancient Romans town, this was destroyed by volcanic pyroclastic flows in 79 AD. One of the best known artwork in the Naples Museum particularly of Pompeii and Herculaneum is ‘’Pan Copulating with Goat‘’. Next was the‘’ Villa the Mysteries‘’ and also ‘’ The Wedding‘’. ‘’Trajan’s Column was an example of sculpture that can be found in Pompeii also not to forget the Arch of Constantine.

Artist For Digital Media (Asia)

Caramelaw (aka Sheena Aw) is a motion graphic designer and illustrator from Singapore. She majored in animation back in school, but ventured into broadcast design when she started working. She has done design work for MTV Asia, Sony International, DC Comics, and many others. She loves drawing fun and crazy candyart. She finds herself immersed in her little world of candies, rainbows and mushrooms. Caramelaw is a big nature lover and it plays a big part in her art creations. Through her art she hopes to reach out to the world and bring joy to those who love her art.
Her name is Sheena Aw. She studied Interactive Media Design in Temasek School of Design (Singapore) and graduated with a diploma. Majored in animation back in school but ventured into broadcast design when she started working. She’s the girl behind Caramelaw's art. She is based in Singapore. She’s a motion graphics artist/video editor by day and candy land super hero by night. She love doing crazy illustrations and customizing toys in her free time.
Her first introduction with vector would be with the use of Macromedia Flash (back then it was still known as MF). She did flash animations back in school and fell in love with the distinctive and clean style of vector art. Flash was a breeze to use to create vector work and it soon became her favorite tool. It never left her since then. After which she will do lots of touch ups and composition layouts in Photoshop.
In My World

It usually starts with a handy sketchbook. Sheena Aw go out and she get inspired, scribble them down, bring the treasure home and start to do more constructive sketching. Honestly she have no idea how her artwork would turn out to be when she start making them into vector illustrations. It just takes on a life of its own as she make progress. It’s fascinating because she never know what to expect. But the results are always satisfying.
Sheena Aw currently working on some character designs with DC comics and also working on the next Depthcore Pack. More customized toys in the making. Exciting times! She do video editing and motion graphics during her day job as a broadcast designer. She used to make on air promos for MTV Asia a few years back, but now she’s trying out corporate videos. She wouldn't say it’s exciting, but it certainly gives her a different set of challenges. Cute + Morbid. That sums it up perfectly.
She is also a big nature lover. Be it trees, animals, flowers, mushrooms, rainbows, raindrops…anything! It plays a big part in her art creations. She love how beautiful and perfect Mother Nature is. Sheena Aw think the world should learn from its beauty and not take anything on earth for granted. She tend to reflect that in most of her artwork.
HEIST

Whenever she create art, she hope it brings a smile to those who look at it. The colors, the characters and the love that is put into it. She think her color scheme plays a big part in her art. Sheena Aw once did an artwork in black and white. It just didn't seem quite right. Though the characters, the story and everything else goes according to plan, but with no color, it just doesn't work at all. Made her really frustrated because she didn't like it. Her art need to have color! Lots and lots of color. Caramelaw style. The more the merrier! So yes, she always apply lots of colors to her art and most of the time keep to similar color schemes because it’s her favorite! Makes she want to throw in more ideas when she see the colors she love to work with. It's like a child being attracted to bright colors.
Sheena Aw favorite piece by now would be "Trees in Heaven." The idea behind it was to feature happy looking trees not on earth but floating above on clouds. In that world, Squirrels tend to their needs, birds with watering cans attached to their feet water the trees. It’s like an afterlife, a view of what happens to trees after people chop them down. For so many years they provided us with wood, shelter and clean air with no complaints, they deserve to go to heaven. But yet, people are still taking nature for granted. It's a message that people need to understand.
Of course! An artwork has got to be a piece of you. It has got to be made with so much love and passion that when people look at it, they could tell it's a chip from the block. That's very important.
Her Majesty

For Sheena Aw and her artwork, it just goes to show, she’s still a child at heart. Growing up never stopped her from her world of imagination, talking monsters and strange friends. She’s still attracted to bright colors and strange things. Like she said before, similar to a child attracted to their cute toys. A place no one can enter but herself. Yet she want to show the world what goes on in her head.
Takashi Murakami. He is her art hero! She love everything he does. His art, his characters, his color schemes, his animation and art direction. She look up to him and what he has achieved as an artist, and she aspire to be like him. Of course she do look at other styles outside of Takashi Murakami. Sheena Aw is a member of the DepthCORE team and all the artists there are like a family. They help each other out by giving ideas and feedback. It's a wonderful platform for exposure and meeting new, great and talented artist around the world. Be sure to visit DepthCORE for more details. It's a wonderful place to get inspired…big time!
Sheena Aw love doing hands on projects, such as customizing toys, like vinyl's, vintage My Little Pony and Pullip dolls. It's a different genre of art itself and she always find herself thinking of new ways and materials to use to "Caramelize" the toys up. It’s really fun and she really enjoy doing it! It gets her mind working and generating new ideas all the time.

She did a custom Pretty Parlour project out of boredom by turning an old vintage pony house into something totally new again. Lots of planning and hard work went into that, but she’s really happy with the results. Also, she created a new species of Pullip dolls and ponies called "Pollips". (Pullips + Ponies) Customized dolls and ponies paired together as a set. Sheena Aw hope they would someday make it big in the Dolly world.
